Sulu felt inexplicably ashamed at himself at Ianto's reaction. The fact that he was willing to do this for Ianto was, okay, a big step in his own life, but he wished that he had been more open and more accomodating for Ianto before now. It felt bad, to know that Ianto was surprised at the things he'd do for him, because he knew it meant he simply hadn't done enough yet to prove how much he cared for the other man. And since the words stuck in his throat, how the hell else was he supposed to show it? He hadn't done a very good job so far, though, and that was a depressing thought.

"I'd be fine with it," he said quietly, trying not to sound as guilty as he felt, "I'll explain enough to Jim to prove that it's important to me, and he's a good man. He'll understand that it's only temporary. I know the rest of the helm crew enough to be able to integrate into a different shift. If you want me to do it, Ianto, consider it done."
