"Is that your phone?" he asked, breathless.
Ianto groaned and rolled out from underneath Sulu, groping around on the floor for his jacket to get the phone from out of the pocket. He frowned at the display before answering the cal.
"Jack?" he asked, moving to sit on the edge of the bed. He paused, listening to what was obviously some explanation of Torchwood something or other, Sulu surmised, otherwise he'd have hung up on the other man by then.
"No, I understand," Ianto said, sighing as he moved to stand up, bending down to pick up his jacket. "Right. I'll be there as soon as I can." And he flipped his phone shut.
"Jack," Ianto said, by way of explanation. "He's uncovered a Weevil nest in an abandoned building set up for demolition, and that's not really a one-man job, even for him. We've got to cover it before it gets too light out." He combed a hand through his hair, trying to straighten it out after it had gotten mussed by Sulu's hands in it. He was disappointed that he had to leave, but on enough of a high from their make-out session to not be to broken up about it.
"We'll take a rain check, yeah?" he said, leaning forward to steal one more kiss from Sulu, who was still lying propped up on the bed, looking a little put out from the fact that they'd had to stop there. That woke Sulu up, though, and he moved to kiss Ianto back.
"Yeah, alright," Sulu said, smiling at him, his brain not actually functioning properly. he knew the other would be back soon, anyway, and as upset as it made him that they had to stop, the promise of something more later, of the fact that they would have this whenever they could get it to work together made him smile like a fool for a good long while even after Ianto had left for Cardiff.

"Hey, there," he said warmly, as he answered the call.
"Hey," Ianto's voice came over the line, but already, with just one word, Sulu could tell that something was up. He paused where he stood, a dirty shirt in hand, frozen in mid-motion as he'd been attempting to clean up his cabin a little bit.
"What's up?" he asked, neutrally.
Ianto sighed. "Something's come up with a case we're working. We... We think we've found out where our guy is going to strike next, and so we've got to set up a bit of a stakeout. But, unfortunately..." he said, trailing off, not really wanting to say the words. Sulu, sensing Ianto's hesitation, stepped up and said them for him.
"Unfortunately that means that tonight's going to have to take a rain check again, then, isn't it," he said. Ianto sighed again, taking a minute to answer, confirming Sulu's conclusion.
"I'm sorry," Ianto said. "I was looking forward to the two of us having some time off together. Jack's got to follow up the trail from another angle, and well. I can't very well leave Gwen to fend for herself with--"
"Ianto," Sulu cut him off, "It's alright. Unfortunate, but understandable. We can always take a rain check. I know that you'd still be coming over if you had any choice in it. Don't worry about it. Go get yourself ready for the night. I'll talk to you later. We'll reschedule."
He knew that Ianto wouldn't be happy with rescheduling, and he wasn't either, to be perfectly honest, but there really was no choice in the matter. Work was work, after all, and the two of them understood that fact all too well. "I'll hear from you soon, though, alright?" Sulu said.
Obviously, it must've placated Ianto enough just for him to have said that. "Yeah, alright," he said, with a resigned note in his voice. "Next time, yeah?"
"Next time," Sulu said, and disconnected their call.

"Easily," Sulu replied, as he browsed the shelves in front of him, looking a lot like a historian who'd stumbled on a secret stash of artifacts. "Places like these all but disappeared mid-21st century. The ones we've got left are more museum than actual rental places."
Ianto shook his head, smiling and following behind Sulu as he slowly traversed the shelves. It still boggled Ianto's mind, somewhat, the idea that everything he knew to be present would be history someday, but there it was. It was getting easier, though, especially when he brought Sulu around and watched him observing things meticulously, knowing that the man was cataloging living history and having a blast doing so. The man in question picked a title up off of the shelf. "Oh, man. I haven't seen this in years..."
Ianto reached out to take the box from him and put it back. "Nope. Not anything you know or could see then. You're in the 21st century--pick something new to you."
Sulu nodded, amused at being reprimanded. "Yeah, alright. That shouldn't be too hard to do..." He stepped back to look around. What was he talking about? he hadn't heard of most of these titles. Unless he wanted to just choose one at random (which was tempting, because that meant that they could get back to Ianto's flat and on with the date quicker), this might actually take some time. Ianto, sensing the hesitation, put a hand on Sulu's shoulder.
"Why don't you pick a genre for now, and we'll work from there, yeah?" he asked, smiling indulgently. Sulu, grateful for the support, nodded and headed off to the action section (Ianto liked Bond, right? There had to be something similar there that they'd both get a kick out of). Which was where they were when Ianto's phone went off, and he had to quietly excuse himself to the end of the aisle. When he came back, though, his face was that neutral mask that Sulu was beginning to associate with bad news. "Sorry," Ianto said, "that was Gwen..."
"Is everything alright?" Sulu asked, taking his hand from where he'd been picking through titles to reach out and take Ianto's. Ianto sighed in response, dropping his eyes to their hands.
"It's Jack," he said, "there's been an accident..." From the way that Ianto said it, it meant that whatever it was, it couldn't have been good. Sure, Jack was immortal, but that didn't mean that Sulu didn't feel sorry for the guy when bad things happened to him.
"Okay," Sulu said, coaxing Ianto on, though he could already see where this was going. "Does Gwen need you to go into work, then?" Ianto nodded.
"It's sometimes better for him to have a familiar face around, when he comes back. Helps him orient himself faster, after..." After having spent so long being dead, he wanted to say, but the words just wouldn't come. He checked his watch. "He's probably got another half an hour at least before he comes back. Gwen says she'll sit with him, but..."
Sulu squeezed his hand. "You want to be there," he said. Ianto nodded. Sulu hooked his other hand under Ianto's chin, bringing his face up so that he could look the other man in the eyes. "Then you should go. This rental shop doesn't look like it's going out of business anytime soon. Another day, alright?"
Ianto nodded, looking disappointed in himself for having to reschedule yet again, but knowing that this was the only option they had. "I'm sorry," he said quietly.
"Don't be," Sulu answered im. "Call me later, to check in? When things get settled down again?" Ianto nodded, and so Sulu squeezed his hand one last time before dropping it. "Go, then. I'll talk to you later." He watched as Ianto ran off to his car and drove away, turning to look a bit forlornly at the movies (for all his words just then, he had been looking forward to tonight, and was a little upset that they had to put it off) before making his way to the back of the store so he could Portkey himself back to his cabin.

"Don't look like that," Sulu said from where he was seated beside him, "not all is lost. I mean." He sent Ianto another coy look of his. "There are CCTV cameras, but you know, who knows. Jack might enjoy a show. Gwen would certainly get a kick out of it."
Ianto shoved Sulu, playfully. He knew that the other was only joking around-he wasn't sure that either of them were quite ready to be walked in on or spied on by Jack or Gwen or well, anyone really. "I already have one incorrigible voyeur around, thank you, don't really need another."
Sulu snorted. "Comparing me to Jack is hardly--" But at that time the earth beneath them shook, and it was all either of them could do to stay upright. The rumbling paused after a moment, and they sat there staring at each other, before it started up with renewed vigor.
"Shit," Ianto exclaimed, scrabbling for the button under the desk to open up the passageway. The two of them raced down to the main area of the Hub to meet with Jack, who was already stationed at the Rift manipulator, fingers whirring at the keys. He spared a glance up at them, his face grim and his eyes unhappy as he took in the fact that Sulu was there too.
"Ianto, get him out of here," Jack ordered, his voice commanding, with a no-nonsense tone to it.
"Wait," Sulu said, adrenaline rushing through his veins, "I could help. At least until Gwen gets here. I could--"
"You are not Torchwood, and you are not my responsibility, Lieutenant. You are not getting killed or injured on my watch. You will go back to your ship and you will do so immediately, do I make myself clear?" Jack yelled, sounding every bit the captain that he was. "Now!"
Sulu reached his hand into his pocket, opening his mouth to say something, but before he could Ianto grabbed him roughly and planted a firm kiss on his lips, before thrusting Sulu's hand further into his pocket to connect with the portkey, sending him whirring back to his cabin with the feeling of Ianto's lips still warm against his own.
Sulu stood in shock for a whole minute, staring at the space n front of him where Ianto had been and trying to figure out what exactly had just happened, what was still happening in Cardiff. There was only one thing he knew for certain, and so he exclaimed it aloud. "So help me god, Ianto Jones, that was not our goodbye..."
5.
"Oh god," Ianto's voice came over the phone. "I've called at the wrong time, haven't I?"
Sulu relaxed, shaking his head, moving to lean against the wall. "Ianto? No. It's...it's fine. I mean, I'm on duty, but... What is it?" Ianto never called out of the blue during his shift just to talk. H never really called just to talk ever, actually.
"Listen, it's about our date coming up..."
Sulu raised an eyebrow. "The one next week? We...we didn't have one sooner that I didn't know about, did we?"
"No. Yes, the one next week. Look, I... I think we're going to need to reschedule again."
"You do?" Sulu asked. He knew he was sounding a bit of a jerk in his responses, but Ianto hadn't ever canceled on him a week in advance before.
"Yeah, sorry. It's just. It's work." Wasn't it always? "I've got to go India, actually."
"India?!" Sulu asked, incredulously. He was an understanding man by nature, but he was also only 21 years old, and he and Ianto had had to cancel their dates a lot lately. He was entitled to being a little upset about the matter.
"I'm sorry," Ianto apologized, sensing that Sulu wasn't very happy either with this turn of events. "There have been all sorts of temporal anomalies showing up around the abandoned site of Torchwood India. We have to go in and see what's causing them and unfortunately, that means I'll be in India next week."
Sulu took a breath. None of this was Ianto's fault, none of it was anyone's fault, it was just Torchwood business, and there wasn't anything either of them could do to change that. He was just feeling a little shaken from the last time and the way they'd had to part ways then. "Alright," he said calmly. "We'll just reschedule, then. You can all me when you're back, and we'll set something up then."
Ianto's voice came sad over the line. "I really am sorry about this. Torchwood...--"
"Ianto," Sulu said, cutting him off, "don't apologize. It's not your fault."
"But it's because of--"
"Stop. You have no control over Torchwood, and I'm not expecting you to. It's fine. We'll reschedule. It'll all work out." A sound came up from the panel. It wasn't anything that needed immediate attention, but he was going to have to adjust the controls a little bit pretty soon. "I... I have to go, but we'll work it out, alright? Don't blame yourself."
Ianto sighed. "I'll try not to," he said. And they disconnected their call.
+1.
"Was that..." Sulu questioned, breaking him out of it.
"A Weevil, yeah," Ianto said, standing up and starting after it. He reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. "God damn it, I'm going to have to call Jack in, I've got the spray but there's no way I'm going to be able to do this alone. You should probably--"
"I could help," Sulu said, interrupting Ianto's train of thought.
"You...what?" Ianto asked.
"I could help. I mean, I assume it's just your run-of-the mill pick up job, right?" Ianto nodded silently, the two of them running off in pursuit of the Weevil in question. "Well, I could help. I'm trained in martial arts, you know. What's Jack got where he is that I don't have right here?"
Ianto chose not to answer that question, knowing Sulu wasn't asking because he wanted an answer, but more to prove his point. And while there was a lot that Sulu didn't have that Jack did, like the training and the experience and the extra few inches of height as well as extra few pounds of weight, Ianto himself wasn't much more qualified than Sulu to do this, other than the fact that it was his job. He watched as the Weevil ducked into an alley that he knew for a fact was a dead end, and made a split second decision.
"...alright. But... Here." He tossed Sulu the anti-Weevil clamps that he'd taken to carrying around with him in his jacket pocket, both for situations like this one and...other things. "I'm going to go in first with the spray. You...you cover me, and be ready to get these on it when we've got it subdued enough, alright?"
Sulu could recognize the note in Ianto's voice that meant he meant business in that moment, a note he'd only heard from the other man a couple of times in the past, and frankly he thought it was more than a little sexy. He nodded in response, and suddenly the two of them were headed into the alleyway and towards the trapped Weevil.
It took them longer than it would have if they'd had time to practice, and there was one point where Ianto was body-slammed by the Weevil into the wall, knocking the breath right out of him, but they finally had the Weevil subdued. It wasn't smooth, and it definitely was a bit more amateur than Ianto was used to handling tings, but in the end they had gotten it done. Ianto moved to stand back against the wall, laughing deeply at all of it while Sulu toed the unconscious Weevil over onto it's back, breathing deeply from the effort and adrenaline of it all.
"Well," Ianto said, smiling coyly at Sulu as he moved to join him by the wall, "we're going to need a bit more rehearsal if we want to take that on the road, but..."
Sulu promptly tugged Ianto toward him and kissed him long and deep, his hands coming up to clutch Ianto to him tightly. Ianto's hands mirrored Sulu, coming up to clutch at Sulu's arms to keep himself from being bowled over by the sheer force of the kiss itself. When the two of them came apart, they were both breathless, Ianto more than a little bit bewildered by it all.
"What was that all about?" he asked, grinning from ear to ear, looking a little flushed, his lips red from the abuse they'd just suffered, his blue eyes shining brightly at the other man.
"You're gorgeous, you know that?" Sulu said, with a grin of his own. He'd been more than a little turned on, actually seeing Ianto in action, doing his job and enjoying it as well.
Ianto blushed prettily, thankful that it was dark and so Sulu couldn't see the fact that he'd blushed all the way to his ears and down his neck like some virginal high school girl. "Well. I... I have heard that before..." he said.
Sulu laughed at him, and Ianto took a step forward, going for the Weevil's feet. "C'mon," Ianto said. "Let's... Let's get this one back to the car and then to the Hub, and then you can show me just how gorgeous you really think I am, yeah?"
Sulu laughed again and followed Ianto's lead. "You're on, Ianto Jones," he said, moving to the other man's aid. Maybe Torchwood wasn't so bad for their romantic life after all...
